Early Life

Big Freedia was born Freddie Ross in New Orleans, Louisiana on 28th January 1978. From childhood, she loved to play piano and sing in the choirs. From that time, music became the first love of her life. Though there is not much information about her parent, it is known that her mother instilled a love of music in her by introducing her to artists, like Patti LaBelle. Later, she was also influenced by the stars like Michael Jackson, Sylvester, and Salt-N-Pepa.

Big Freedia attended Walter L. Cohen School where she joined the choir and became the choir director. This was the time when she learned to write songs and also produce music. 

Career

In 1998, a drag queen, Katey Red was working on bounce music at the club around Melpomene Project, only a few blocks away from where Freddie was brought up. She got immensely influenced by her style and music and started working as the background dancer in her troop.

In 1999, she took her stage name ‘Big Freedia’ and launched her first single ‘An Ha, Oh Yeah’. She started to perform it in many clubs in New Orleans. After that, she also released several other local hits, like, ‘Gin ‘N My System’, ‘Rock around the Clock’, etc.

In 2003, she launched her single studio album, ‘Queen Diva’. 

From her style of music, she is categorized as the artist of the ‘sissy bounce’ subgenre. She became widely known only after 2009 when she did a fest-closing gig with Katey Red. In 2010, she self-released an album, Big Freedia Hitz Vol. 1 from Big Freedia Records. This album was the collection of all works of Big Freedia from 1999 to 2010.

In the same year, she was signed to present bounce music at a music festival in Austin, but it was canceled due to some injury. Later, she joined a summer tour with Katey Red, Cheeky Blakk, and Sissy Nobby and became the guest on an album, named Ya-Ka-May through funk band, Galactic.

She did many gigs by joining several bands of girls. Her album also ranked 161 on US Billboard Chart. Besides music, she also appeared on HBO’s Treme, which was working on restructuring after Katrina. In the year 2012, she performed live on the Jimmy Kimmel show.
